A Few Things Everyone Should Know About Disability by Kathy Burns-Millyard

Did you know? One year of disability can wipe out 10 year's worth of savings.

Other interesting things to know about disability:

- 7 out of 10 people between the ages of 35 and 65 become disabled for three months or longer.

- The average length of disability lasting longer than 90-days is 36 Months.

- Most American families have only enough money in savings to cover two months worth of bills.

- In 2000, wage and productivity losses from unintential injuries was $259.8 billion (Statistical Abstract of the US: 2002)

- The maximum Social Security disability payment for 30-yr old earning $70,000 per year is just $1600 per month.

- To be eligible for Social Security disability, your disability must last at least 12 months.

- Social Security Disability will only pay an approved claim after a minimum of 5 months have passed.

So if you suddenly become disabled... how would you pay your bills?

What is disability?

The Random House Webster's Dictionary of American English defines disability as:
"Lack of adequate strength or ability; incapacity; a physical or mental handicap; anything that disables or puts one at a disadvantage"

The Social Security Administration defines disability this way:
"The inability to engage in any substantial gainful activity by reason of any medically determinable physical or mental impairment which can be expected to result in death or has lasted or can be expected to last for a continuous period of not less than 12 months." Emphasis Added

Simply put: Disability generally means that you are unable to work. And Social Security Disability means you are unable to work at anything.

Disability can happen at any time, to anyone - regardless of race, religion, gender or profession.

Sometimes people become disabled dur to injuries received in a car accident. And sometimes it's a simple matter of getting hurt while participating in sports, or improving your home in your off hours.

A very common injury that can cause you to become unable to work, is a back injury. And back injuries can happen simply by moving furniture, working in a garden, or fixing a leak in your roof.

Other people become unable to work due to an illness or the onset of a disease: Like diabetes, stroke, or heart attack. And even pregnancy can cause some females to become unable to work: If the pregnancy develops other complications that require the woman to stay in bed, she is unable to work.

This Can Happen to You Too.

Unfortunately, people often assume that just because they're healthy, they can't become disabled. And that's simply not true. Accidents happen. So being healthy doesn't usually have anything to do with whether you become disabled.

Let's look at some undeniable facts:

- In 2000, wage and productivity losses from unintentional injuries was $259.8 billion (Statistical Abstract of the US: 2002)
- In 1999: 338,000 people were injured in a fall
- In 1999: 141,000 people were injured due to overexertion
- In 1999: 338,000 people experienced sprains and strains

And just a few of the ways these injuries happened included:

- Hand and power saws
- Hammers
- Kitchen flatware
- Beds
- Tables
- Ladders
- Rugs and Carpets
- Footwear
- Bicycles
- Swimming Pools

Home Herbal Migraine Remedies by Brian B. Carter, MS, LAc

This is one of my favorite topics! Wanna know why?

Because I've suffered from migraines for 2 years, and my unique position as an herbalist and acupuncturist has allowed me to learn about and experiment with a number of home migraine remedy you may not have heard of.

Chinese herbal medicine is still new and unknown to most westerners. I've found some effective solutions from China that few people know about.

And now I get to share them with you!

On this page, I'm going to talk exclusively about home migraine remedy - if you want to read more about migraine symptoms, causes, and acupuncture, check out my previous articles:

What is a Migraine, anyway?
It's more than a headache. It's a neurological configuration - any number of symptoms can show up, and more than one thing can cause it.

It's as if you tend toward this neurological configuration, called migraine - like you're already on the edge of it, and certain things can push you over.

Or, it's like you're filling a water glass, but you can't stop pouring, and it overflows. In this analogy, the water is all the factors that cause your migraine, and the overflow is the migraine itself.

How do you stop the Migraine tendency?
The way to prevent it is to balance the imbalances that lead to migraine. Your home migraine remedy should take care of at least one of these imbalances.

I'm going to suggest our basic home migraine remedy, called "Relieve Constraint" that will help with a number of the causes of migraine.

Here are the major migraine contributors,
with at least one home migraine remedy each:

1. Stress and emotional constraint: Relieve Constraint herbal formula

2. Sinus congestion and sinus headaches: Relieve Constraint herbal formula, and possibly a sinus infection home remedy

3. Indigestion and dysbiosis: Relieve Constraint herbal formula, get any complicated or chronic digestive problems diagnosed and treatment by a natural medicine specialist

4. Inflammation: Relieve Constraint herbal formula

5. Neck misalignment and tension headaches (this is your author right here, sitting at a computer): Chiropractic and acupuncture, stress reduction, and Relieve Constraint herbal formula

6. Food allergies: Get good IgG and IgE food allergy tests, make sure you don't also have systemic candida, and avoid/rotate the foods you are allergic to.

If you can't afford the $100 food allergy test from your alternative medicine provider, you can instead try going 1 month each without wheat, dairy, and yeast. Those are the most common offenders. If any of them is involved, you should notice a difference!

7. Irregular eating: Eat more regularly. Identify and deal with hypoglycemia - research shows, and specialists know that hypoglycemia can cause rebound migraines. See below for eating tips.

If you don't have a regular appetite, Relieve Constraint will help somewhat, but you may want to consider medical-quality enzyme supplements.

8. Fatigue or lack of exercise: If exercise makes you worse, then you need strengthening herbs. However, you may have to wait til #1-6 above are better before you can tonify yourself.
If exercise makes you better, then you're stagnant. Keep exercising, especially aerobic like basketball, running, or swimming, and take Relieve Constraint.

Dietary Home Migraine Remedy Options:
As mentioned in the chart, hypoglycemia can lead to rebound migraines. There's some research to back that up - see the references at the bottom of the page.

How to control your hypoglycemia:

* Increase the amount of protein in your diet (meat, poultry, fish, nuts, beans) and eat smaller meals more frequently during the day to sustain energy.
* Never go for more than four or five hours without eating -- preferably no more than three hours.
* If you sleep in on weekends, but find you wake with the beginnings of a migraine, keep a starchy snack by the bed.
* Eat small, starchy snacks, but not sugary or processed foods, on a regular basis. Crackers, rice, bread, and pasta are all good, as are fruits and nuts.
* Many migraine sufferers find that strenuous or prolonged exercise lowers their blood sugar levels and makes them more prone to attacks. Try taking a glucose tablet (or a teaspoon of glucose) before exercising, and a starchy snack within half an hour of finishing. This may help compensate for lost energy. However, once your diet has been corrected, glucose tablets shouldn't be necessary.
Not having an appetite is a problem!

Most people worry about their weight and want to get rid of their appetites. But for a migraineur, not having an appetite is a problem. Whether you are enzyme deficient, or your gastrointestinal system is all backed up, or both, you need to fix it.

If you don't have an appetite, you won't eat enough (leading to hypoglycemia), and even if you do eat enough, you won't be able to digest it properly. Indigestion will create more problems, like acid reflux or intestinal stagnation. Since everything in your body is connected, and migraineurs are so sensitive, all of these things can contribute to a migraine.

Herbal Home Migraine Remedy Options:
Let me tell you about a modern migraine formula, called
Relieve Constraint.

This is a modern Chinese herbal formula, a home migraine remedy. It comes from a book by Philippe Sionneau, a famous European Chinese medicine translator and author. Philippe translated it from the Chinese article written by Dr Cao De Ting in the Shan Dong Chinese Medicine Journal (1988, #1).

The full name of this home migraine remedy is the "Order the Qi and Resolve the Depression Decoction." It's based on what has become one of my favorite Chinese herbal formulas, "Yue ju wan," also known as the "Escape Restraint Pill." This formula was written by herbal master Zhu Dan Xi in the 14th century A.D.

The Relieve Constraint home migraine remedy relieves all 6 types of constraint (with the herb for each):

qi (cyperus)
blood (ligustici)
dampness (atractylodes)
food (shenqu)
phlegm (atractylodes)
heat (gardenia)

Added to the basic Escape Restraint Pill (to make the Relieve Constraint home migraine remedy) are several other herbs for emotional constraint, nourishing, moving the excess qi and blood down out of the head, relieving tension, and stopping pain. These herbs are chrysanthemum, cassia, tribulus, uncaria, peony, and licorice.

How do you use it?
Take it when you know a migraine is coming, or even before that after one of the migraine contributors has occurred in your daily life. It can help once the migraine is already there, but as with other home migraine remedy, it's much more effective the sooner you take it.

Depending on how bad and how frequent your migraines are, you might use this home migraine remedy every day, or every few days. If they're really bad, I'd take it every day for a while (2-4 weeks) until it's much better. Then, you still may need it occasionally unless you eliminate all migraine triggers, move to the countryside, and live a perfectly relaxed life;-)

Nutritional Supplement Home Migraine Remedy Options:
Here are some nutrients suggested to be very important in the Balch's Prescriptions for Nutritional Healing:

Calcium and Magnesium: 2000 mg daily Ca, 1000 mg daily Mg
CoQ10: 60 mg daily
Essential Fatty Acids
Multivitamin and mineral formula
Vitamin B3 (niacin) plus niacinamide: 200mg 3x daily of niacin, 800mg daily of niacinamide - but do not take if you have a liver disorder, gout, or high blood pressure
Rutin: 200mg daily

How to Treat Allergies and Prevent Frequent Colds in Children by Brian B. Carter, MS, LAc

Allergy medications like Allegra and Nasacort are one way to go if you need an allergy medication. Another general allergy relief product is the Chinese Herbal Medicine, Jade Windscreen. Traditionally, it is indicated for allergy prevention and frequent colds. This Q&A about child allergy gives information about all of this, and discusses the plum flower brand herb formula made by the Mayway Corp.

Question: I am new to Chinese Medicine and have taken my adult-sized 13 year old to an Acupuncturist who has prescribed Plum Flower brand Jade Screen Tea Pills for her (Yu Ping Feng San Wan). She has been directed to take 12 pills 1X daily to help her with her immune system and allergies. It is distributed by Mayway and has huang qi, bai zhu, and fang feng. I am trying to investigate these herbs to determine if they could harm her in any way. She is currrently taking Allegra and Nasacort, a steroid nasal spray, for allergies. Do you have any info or recommendations of sources of info for me? Many thanks!
-Marjie

A: Marjie, that is a great question!

I'm glad you are trying to stay informed- a bit of skepticism toward any medicine makes sense these days... There is a lot of weird stuff that gets passed under the guise of 'Alternative Medicine.'

Welcome to Oriental Medicine! Chinese herbal medicine is quite different from western pharmaceutical medicine. I am glad that you are seeing a practitioner for herbs- herbal self-prescription can be dangerous. If your acupuncturist has been trained in herbs (the degree of herbal training varies by school and by state), then they should know what they're doing.

YPFS (Yu Ping Feng San) is often prescribed for exactly the purpose you described. It is also commonly taken to prevent colds, especially if they are chronic. It may take 1-5 months for the effect to take hold. YPFS is indicated for people with symptoms of: aversion to drafts, spontaneous sweating (without exercise), recurrent colds, shiny pale complexion, and these signs: pale Tongue with white coating, floating deficient soft Pulse.

Explaining the actions of any herbal formula can be as complex as one of those pharmaceutical package inserts with all the biomchemistry, drawings of molecules, etc. Oriental Medicine is its own complete system of medicine complete with its own set of terms and concepts. But I will attempt to explain YPFS to you in regular English:

Huang Qi (astragalus) strengthens the qi, and regulates the exterior; this means that it strengthens the wei qi (the type of qi that most closely correlates with white blood cell immunoactivity). By stabilizing the exterior, HQ prevents inappropriate sweating and makes it hard for pathogens (allergens, viruses, etc.) to enter. HQ is a very safe herb. More on Astragalus and viruses.

Bai Zhu (atractylodis) strengthens qi in the center of the body (the digestive system), which according to Oriental Medical theory, indirectly strengthens wei qi.

Fang Feng (ledebouriellae) is also generally a wei qi level herb which expels wind (Wind is an Oriental Medical concept, not easy to explain in a few words, but perhaps you can think of it as "any external disease-causing agent that could overwhelm the immune system."). F.Y.I. the word feng means wind... just the same in this herb's name as in the name of the formula.

'Jade Windscreen' is so named because the formula creates a screen between the patient and wind invasion. The formula is said to be as precious and valuable as jade.

To get back to your question- "Can these herbs harm her in any way?" The answer is No so long as your practitioner's diagnosis is correct. The herb formula in itself is quite safe, and has no real cautions or contraindications.

Pharmaceuticals, Patent Herbs, & Personalized Herbs

1. Allegra and Nasacort both have short and long-term side effects:

Allegra Side-Effects: Cold/flu's, nausea, dysmenorrhea, drowsiness, dyspepsia, fatigue

Nasacort Side-Effects: Oral candidiasis, hoarsenss, dry throat, irritated throat, dry mouth, wheezing, cough, facial edema

If the YPFS works, these drugs might become unnecessary or redundant. Of course, that needs to be decided by a qualified practitioner familiar with your daughter's medical history.

2. Pharmaceutical prescription is more potentially harmful than Chinese Herbal medicine, especially when patients are on more than one drug for the long-term. This is because even when properly prescribed, pharmaceuticals still can cause side-effects. When properly prescribed, Chinese herbal formulas do not cause side-effects. In Oriental Medicine, there is not one herb or formula for each disease. We take the disease into account, but we also figure in each person's unique internal landscape. Appropriate herbal prescriptions have much fewer and more benign side-effects than pharmaceuticals because they utilize multiple active ingredients to prevent any one agent from causing imbalance.

3. It is possible to achieve good results with patent (pre-formulated) herbal formulas like the mayway pills, but the ultimate form of Chinese Herbal medicine is personalized prescription. These are available in powdered and raw herb forms, and require the attention and prescription of a highly-trained OM practitioner. Not all acupuncturists are trained to this degree, and many of those that are still rely heavily on patent herbs anyway.

Hope this helps- If you have any other questions, let me know!

The Research Proven Supplements for Adult-Onset Diabetes (Type II) by Brian B. Carter, MS, LAc

Q: What are some good herbs for diabetes?

Answer: All of the following info is based on research. See the references at the end of the article.

Typical Western (M.D.) Diabetes Treatments and Side Effects
Along with the usual lifestyle recommendations for Diabetes Type II (exercise, weight control, and diet therapy), MD's prescribe glucose-lowering drugs and insulin injections. Glucose-lowering drugs can have adverse effects like severe hypoglycemia, lactic acidosis, idiosyncratic hepatocellular (liver cell) injury, permanent neurologic deficit, digestive discomfort, headache, dizziness, and death.

Herbs for Diabetes
There are some proven alternatives to glucose-lowering drugs. One hypoglycemic herb, Galega oficianalis, was integral to the development of Metformin. They may not all be potent enough to replace anti-diabetic drugs, but comprehensive Chinese herbal therapy may be. Many of the herbs were taken in combination with oral drug therapy, resulting in lowered glucose levels.

You should definitely consider herbs and drugs with the help and guidance of a physician or two - whatever kind of physician they are! (In California, acupuncturists are considered physicians)

Western, Chinese and Ayurvedic Herbs
Both Ayurveda and Chinese Medicine are systems of medicine. Each has its own herbs... for example, Ginseng and Dang Gui are Chinese Herbs. Prescriptions contain multiple herbs in specific proportions; each herb balances or enhances another. Western herbs, such as St. John's Wort, are generally used one at a time just like western drugs. Thus, there is more risk of side effects.

Western Herbs for Diabetes Type II

* Bitter Melon Dried powder 3-15g daily OR Standardized capsules 100-200mg 3 times per day
* Alium Cepa (Onions) One 400mg capsule daily
* Allium Sativum (Garlic) 4g Fresh or 8mg essential oil
* Bilberry 80-160mg 3 times daily of 25% anthrocyanoside extract
* Aloe Vera 1 tbsp juice twice daily
* Salt Bush 3g per day

Ayurvedic Herbs from India for Diabetes Type II
* Fenugreek 15g powdered, soaked in water; 10-100g daily
* Gurmar (Gymnema Sylvestre) 400mg daily
* Pterocarpus Marsupium 2-4g daily

Chinese Herbs for Diabetes Type II
* Asian Ginseng (Panax) 1-3g of root or 200-600mg standardized extract See the article "Diabetes & Ginseng" ([http://pulsemed.org/diabetesginseng.htm])for more information before taking Ginseng
* American Ginseng
* Green Tea (No specific dosage recommended)
* Quei Fu Di Huang Wan (formula) 26 mg/kg every 8 h, three times daily
* Rou Gui 50 mg/kg
* Tang Niao Kang (formula) (No dosage specified)

Many Chinese herbs have the proven ability to lower glucose levels. However, they should be prescribed according to pattern discrimination (diagnosis). Your Chinese medical physician will diagnose you and then prescribe a personalized herbal formula or patent medicine that contains the appropriate herbs.

Here is a list of these proven chinese diabetes herbs for your reference:

Jiang Can
Li Zhi He
Yu Mi Xu
Di Gu Pi
Bai Zhu (atractylodes)
Cang Zhu
Fu Ling
Gen Gen
Gou Qi Zi
He Shou Wu (polygonum)
Hu Zhang
Huang Bai
Huang Jing
Huang Qi (astragalus)
Mai Men Dong
Mai Ya
Ren Shen (panax ginseng)
Sang Ye
Shan Zhu Yu
Shan Yao (diascorea)
Sheng Di (raw rehmannia)
Tian Hua Fen
Wu Bei Zi
Xian He Cao
Yin Yang Huo
Yu Zhu
Ze Xie
Zhi Mu

Minerals for Diabetes Type II
* Chromium Picolinate 500mcg twice daily
* Vanadium 100mg per day
* Magnesium (No dosage recommended)

One study proved that it couldn't just be mineral content in herbs that lowers glucose levels. Another suggested that alternative medicine practitioners should not change a patient's insulin dosage. Not only is it illegal, but it's dangerous, and has resulted in patient going into diabetic comas.

How to Take These Herbs

I would advise against combining the herbs listed above without professional advice. Please see an herbalist trained for years and certified by some licensing or professional body before taking any herbs. Herbs could interact with your medications, or with one another. Each of these three traditions has wisdom, experience, and research behind their

The Miraculous Tape Worm Diet Pill by Brian B. Carter, MS, LAc

The Miraculous Tape Worm Diet Pill and the Fabulous All Chocolate Weight Loss Plan

This article is a joke, ok? Just want to make sure you don't take me wrong! Gotta keep your trust for my serious articles... :-)

It's amazing that it took medical science this long to put it together.

The Western world has known ever since we first landed in the tropics about how effective tape worms can be for losing weight. And we've tried so many diet pills that didn't work.

What took physicians so long to realize that a tape worm diet pill was the best way to harness nature's power to fight the unstoppable food cravings she gave us?

Tape Worm Diet Pills in History

Historians tell us that the early explorers who witnessed the power of the tape worm diet in 18th century Mexico were so fit and svelte, they simply considered it an uncivilized oddity. In fact, the famous Portuguese mountaineer and sea explorer, Gustavo DeMenthes (1732-1782?), wrote in his Jornal do Partido, "These unfortunate indians not only cannot read or write, but they spend most of the day trying to convince us to eat their strange bread recipe called 'Oreos'."

Historians are divided on the ultimate fate of DeMenthes, though rumor has it (according to his first mate) that he smuggled a large stash of Oreos back to Portugal, and went mad when he ran out. It is a matter of public record that he was once thrown in jail about 6 months after returning to Portugal. The record shows that the original charge of 'Attempting to Steal His Majesty's Frigate' was dropped and changed to 'Public Intoxication'. He soon after disappeared altogether from Portugal.

The Tape Worm Diet Pill in Late 19th Century New York
Modern historians think it more than a coincidence that the man who introduced the tape worm diet pill to the United States came from Mexico and was named Henriques Dimintio. He probably was DeMenthes' great great grandson. Dimintio traveled all the way to New York City to make a fortune off his 'Oreos'. He met a young, energetic French baker named John Nabis, who loved the cookie and thought it had Great Market Potential.

Then Dimintio explained how Oreos went perfectly with his traditional tape worm diet pill. Nabis wouldn't hear of it- he didn't care if people got fat, he wasn't going to sell worms and food to them at the same time! The two new friends had already a lot of Mexican tequila, so the argument quickly became a scuffle. Result: 12 crushed oreos, 105 dead tape worms, and 2 estranged business partners.

Nabis stole the Oreo idea, and his company, Nabisco, is still going strong. He got his due, though... As you can see in their official 'history', Nabis gets no credit whatsoever for his company, or Demintio's cookie - in fact they will deny that there ever was a John Nabis involved. Call them and see!

Dimintio subsequently tried to convince two more baker/entrepreneurs to merge cookies and tape worms, but they brushed him off. He became depressed. We have a record of him at Mt. Sinai, New York City's oldest hospital, where he received water bath therapy, which was all modern medicine had for depression in the late 1800's. Local history in his hometown in Mexico has it that he returned home to his wife and family to bake cookies during the day and play sad Mariachi songs at night.

Rampant Obesity in the 20th and 21st Century
By the end of the 20th century, it was clear that Demintio had been way ahead of his time. Obesity was on the rise, and food addictions were in full swing. Even children as young as nine were eating themselves into adult-onset diabetes. The term 'globesity' was coined to describe this worldwide health crisis.

Ever ahead of the health curve, the Canadian government ordered an exhaustive study of all weight loss solutions known to man. Organizations like Weightwatchers were investigated, diets like The Zone, Atkins, and South Beach were evaluated, herbs like ephedra were eaten, snorted, and injected, tribal peoples across the world were extorted in an attempt to discover their weight loss wisdom... not a single stone was left unturned.

Finally, the government-appointed Canadian National Committee for the Sane Control of Weight issued its monstruously authoritative 500-page report, and overnight it became a Canadian bestseller.

Readers in America still haven't heard of it. It's Canadian! Who cares?? One American publisher firm attempted to take on the U.S. distribution of the report, but ran into translation difficulties. The movie rights, however, are still available.

Among the Committee's findings are:

* No diet works for everyone
* Most obese people are lazy, but so are many skinny people
* Many obese people eat lots of sugar and diet sodas, but so do skinny Hollywood fashion models
* Professional athletes usually are not obese
* Anorexics don't gain weight

In short, the report was stunning in its inconclusiveness. The only points of light were some promising newer diets that had not yet been tried by large groups of people, or by large groups of large people, which included:

* The Tape Worm Diet Pill
* The Miraculous All Chocolate Diet
* The Ephedra Weight Loss Pizza

Experts, in the report, expressed concerns about each of these diets. Yet, they concluded, "we must try anything and everything, leaving no stone unturned, until everyone in the world can look like Jennifer Lopez and Brad Pitt."

Ok, ok, let's get serious.

I really am working on an ephedra weight loss pizza.

Stay tuned.

Acupuncture Weight Loss with 5 Step Plan by Brian B. Carter, MS, LAc

I remember back in my senior year of high school - my best friend since 5th grade was living in France. He wrote that they didn't like Americans much. "They think we're all fat," he said. With his own skinny frame, of course, he confounded their belief.

But, he added a funny, or perhaps ironic capstone to the issue. "I went to a store, and they were selling statues of these fat people, and, at the base of each one was written, 'American.'"

Obesity is not only an American problem. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), it's a global problem. They call it globesity. Parodoxically, their understanding of this problem began with their original mission to eliminate hunger and malnutrition. We live in a world where many have nothing to eat, and many eat too much. From 1995 to 2000, the number of obese adults worldwide mushroomed from 200 million to 300 million. That's a 50% increase in just 5 years!

What is Obesity, and What is Overweight?
Overweight means an excess of body weight. This excess weight may be muscle, bone, fat, and/or body water. Obesity refers specifically to an abnormally high proportion of body fat. You can be overweight without being obese - for example, a bodybuilder or other highly-muscled athlete. But many people who are overweight are also obese. The main way to determine whether you are overweight or obese is with the body mass index (BMI). It doesn't directly measure body fat, and it's not gender specific, but it does give you a pretty reliable estimation.

To find your BMI, divide your weight (in kilograms) by your height in meters squared. Yep, for the math-challenged, that's complex, so I'll give you a website that will figure it out for you, the National Institute's of Health BMI calculator ([http://www.nhlbisupport.com/bmi/]). This will very quickly tell you if you are normal, overweight, or obese, and it does all the calculating and metric conversions for you!

Overweight is defined as a BMI above 25 (including those above 30 BMI, too), and obese is a BMI above 30. So, all obese people are overweight, but not all overweight people are obese.

The Obesity Epidemic
Obesity isn't just about not feeling good or having trouble getting dates…

It leads to more than 300,000 premature deaths each year in the United States. 90,000 are preventable cancer deaths. (CDC)

Severely obese men die 13 years sooner than men of normal weight (JAMA).
As a killer in America, obesity is second only to tobacco. (CDC)

The Weight Loss Industry

Spending: Americans spend between $40-50 billion per year to lose weight.
Results: I haven't seen any recent news that Americans are getting any thinner - have you?

Conclusion: What people are doing isn't working. If we want different results, we have to try a different solution.

Acupuncture Weight Loss: Fantasy, or Fact?

Fantasy or Fact? As a well-trained and fairly conservative Chinese medicine practitioner, I had assumed that acupuncture for weight loss was a marketing fad and a patient fantasy.
Evidence: But while researching my upcoming book Chinese Medicine: A Practical Guide to Optimal Healing, I found some surprisingly positive information that changed my mind.
Chinese Medicine's Collective Clinical Data on Acupuncture Weight Loss
Chinese Medicine has thousands of years of clinical experience. This collective data not as convincing as randomized controlled trials are, but it does contain truth - it's imperfect but still valid and important.

A U.S. government study in the 80's concluded that 85% of western medicine is based on clinical experience, not on research. (Office of Technology Assessment of the Congress of the United States, The Impact of Randomized Controlled Trials on Health Policy and Medical Practice, Background Paper OTA-BP-H-22. Also see Michael Millenson's book, Demanding Medical Excellence)

There is good Chinese Medicine research in Taiwan, Australia, and Europe that gets ignored by American scientists and media. Much research in Chinese has not even been translated into English.

Seven Studies of Acupuncture for Weight Loss

How it works: By enhancing the function of two neuroendocrine pathways that regulate many bodily processes, including metabolism.

What it does:

* Lowers body weight, body fat, insulin levels, and lipid levels in the blood
* Decreases excessive appetite and makes it easier to satisfy your hunger with less food.
* Decreases menopausal weight gain
In one study, acupuncture took off 10 pounds in 2 months - that translates to 60 lbs in a year!
* Combined with diet control, and aerobic counseling it not only takes off the pounds and body fat, but keeps them off, especially if you're diligent with their exercise.
(See references at end of article for the research)

Ephedra misuse and mislegislation

Ephedra is a Chinese herb for colds and coughs. It has been misused to increase metabolism, and this misuse has caused numerous deaths. As a result, the FDA is considering a total ban on ephedra products. We can blame two major things:

Supplement companies that care more about your money than your health (no, not all of them are that way, but some of them are, especially the ones that market weight loss formulations).
The idea that you can medicate yourself safely with herbs - self-medication of any kind is risky. Self-medication with herbs is off the radar, and people generally think they can do it safely. The ephedra debacle is an example of how dangerous it can be.

Traditionally, Chinese herbs are given in formulas (not singly), which is safer and more personalized. They're prescribed by a Chinese medicine practitioner who diagnoses your specific imbalances first. Ephedra would never be given for weight loss, but only for certain kinds of colds and coughs, and only to people whose body's can handle it.

No traditional Chinese herbs should be outlawed without allowing Chinese medical practitioners to continue to use them traditionally.

Food Cravings

Problem #1 (Enzyme Deficiency): The foods you crave depending on your personal imbalances. Modern digestive science explains that when your body can't digest a food, you crave more of it - you're not getting what you need from it. This lead to a cycle of craving and overeating the exact food you can't digest.

Problem #2 (Low Blood Sugar): Another vicious cycle happens when you can't digest complex carbs, so your blood sugar is low, so you eat simple carbs that raise your blood sugar which raises insulin, which lowers your blood sugar again, and your stuck eating donuts and feeling horrible.

Solution: Enzymes (I recommend various enzyme formulations from a company called Transformations) and Chinese herbal formulas can help you digest your food and break both of these cycles

Weight can be lost safely if done slowly and naturally. You can lose up to 2 lbs per week without gaining it back. That means you could lose 104 lbs this year and keep it off!

Positive change is like stretching a rubber band- if you stretch too far too fast, it breaks or snaps back on you.

So avoid the temptation to take an easy solution like ephedra or citrus aurantium (both misused Chinese herbs), because you'll gain the weight back, and you're risking heart problems and stroke.

5 Things to Do Right Now
To Lose 10 Pounds Within 2 Months
And Keep Them Off:

1. Avoid heavily marketed supplements - instead, see a professional trained herbalist (acupuncturist) - it's safer and more effective - my preference would be a Chinese medicine practitioner, but some very well-educated western herbalists are good too.
2. Acupuncture Weight Loss: See an acupuncturist/chinese herbalist - Get acupuncture (once to three times per week) to SAFELY regulate your metabolism and hunger-satisfaction. Your acupuncturist can also get you the herbs that will balance your digestion and cravings - and based on your Chinese pattern diagnosis, they can also give you personalized diet advice. Herbs and enzymes (specific formulations from the enzyme company, Transformations) can eliminate your food cravings.
3. Develop a plan and goals with your acupuncturist and aerobics instructor- make it realistic, and stick to it. If you mess up, don't beat yourself up, just get back on track as soon as you can. Any progress is better than none at all.
4. Eat less, exercise more - Eat a low fat diet, and don't miss breakfast! Weigh yourself regularly, and exercise an hour a day. Start by walking a few minutes each day, or take the stairs at work. Don't overdo it! Remember the rubber band. In fact, you may want to wear a rubber band on your wrist to remind yourself to make changes slowly. Get some aerobic exercise help- a public class, or private aerobic counseling.
5. Join a support group like Weight Watchers or Overeaters Anonymous. There's nothing like positive friends to encourage you and keep you on track. OA members say that this spiritual program of action has changed the way they relate to food.

Your teeth don't have to show your age by Dr George Druttman

Your teeth don't have to show your age

We can't stop ageing - but we can make the best of what we already have. Looking after your skin and general appearance is one step. But what about your teeth? They are a revealing sign of ageing - yet surprising things can be done today to reverse this process, says Dr. George Druttman, of Cap600 London City Dental [http://www.cap600.com]

Staying young-looking
Teeth are one of the first features that people look at. Our teeth deteriorate over the years, gradually taking on more and more imperfections that betray our age - or make us look even older than we really are. In Western society, where one in six people will soon be over 65, everybody wants to stay as young-looking as possible.

So how can a 50-year old stay young-looking? Well, maybe she has fortunate genes, looks after her skin regularly (often in addition to great genes) and has had excellent cosmetic facial surgery. To look at her, you wouldn't be able to guess her true age - until she starts smiling. Then her mouth gives the game away. How? Because of the state of her teeth.

Signs of ageing - your teeth
So how do your teeth betray your age? Their colour changes over time, losing brightness and luminosity, and becoming darker. Dental wear will shorten teeth, making them look 'stubby'. Years of food, nicotine and fluid stains can also stain teeth permanently.

Tooth shape: The natural smile line is a gentle convex. But extensive wear on our front teeth can change this to a straight or even concave line (reversed curve). Tooth grinding (prompted by stress), accelerates this dental erosion. Chipped tooth edges are another sign, creating an unbalanced and disharmonious look.

Tooth surface: The fine ridges on young teeth get smoothed away as we get older. While in early adulthood such smoothing can produce attractive teeth that reflect light more uniformly, too much smoothing will show age.

Tooth crack lines: Over time, micro-fractures can appear on the enamel surface. While perhaps superficial, they can show up as little crack lines, which will downgrade the attractiveness of teeth.

Filled front teeth: White fillings in front teeth need to be regularly replaced or they change colour and start to look obvious. They may even show dark lines between the edge of the filling and the natural tooth.

Smile colour: White reflects light and dark absorbs it. A mouth with silver-mercury (amalgam) fillings in many of the teeth will present an overall dull grey colour that absorbs light and therefore looks dark. It's another sign of ageing.

Signs of ageing - your lips
Over time the lips lose muscle tone and become thinner and narrower. The top lip can sag, covering more of the upper teeth. The lower lip may also drop, showing more of the lower teeth.

If you had fairly thin lips when young, then they will become even more so. Also thin vertical lines appear in the lips, which are accentuated and hastened by smoking. Crease lines can also appear at the corners of the lips, often with a more significant, deeper crease line, angled downward, which can make you look permanently unhappy.

What can you do restore youthful looks?
Your smile is the key to your facial appearance. So you need to do something about any old, worn, chipped and discoloured teeth you have and remove these obvious clues to ageing. The essence in good cosmetic/ aesthetic dentistry is to combine modern techniques with artistic flair - so that nobody can guess what's been done.

Ways of improving your teeth
Re-contouring: A little bleaching whitens the teeth and slight reshaping restores the edges of the teeth to what they were in youth.

Replacing fillings: Using modern materials for the front and most prominent teeth can cause the dental restoration work to blend in with the general colour of the tooth.

Bonding: A synthetic material that looks like natural tooth enamel is bonded to the enamel tooth surface. Because it can be shaped and polished, this material can alter the colour, texture, size, shape and even, to an extent, the position of the teeth. The treatment can be applied to the eight to twelve upper front teeth. It lasts from three to six years.

Veneering: A technique similar to bonding - only more permanent. A thin, hard porcelain veneer is individually made for each tooth to the correct colour, size and shape. Porcelain is as durable as the original tooth enamel so the restored tooth will last for decades rather than years. Veneering is often done on front incisor teeth that have been damaged.

Improving your lips
Thin lips can be treated by using fillers to accentuate the lip line (vermillion border) between the red part of the lips and the normal skin. These fillers are, for example, bovine collagen, or natural hyaluronic acid (Restylane). The effect lasts up to twelve months. The substance of the lip can also be increased by injecting Restylane or even fat from another part of the body into the lip itself. The result, of course, depends on how much and where it is placed.

So how can your smile make you look younger?
Look in the mirror for a few minutes. Decide what parts of your face, and particularly your smile, you would like to rejuvenate using the techniques mentioned above. Then consult with a cosmetic dental surgeon, who can show you an accurate simulation of how treatment would look on your face. It is advisable to do this before going ahead with any cosmetic surgery on your face.

Most cosmetic medical surgeons are still not orientated or even knowledgeable enough about what cosmetic dentists are able to achieve with teeth. A few short dental treatments can take years off your looks, helping you evaluate whether other surgery is necessary.

The Raw Food Solution with Paul Nison by Boyd Martin

"Your food shall be your remedies, and your remedies shall be your food." -- Hippocrates

"Always take a good look at what you're about to eat. It's not so important to know what it is, but it's critical to know what it was." --Texas Bix Bender, "Cowboy Wisdom"

It seems a particularly Western idea that in order to attain a high level of health, it must be something we eat, drink or otherwise ingest. The search for a "magic pill," fueled by unrelenting pharmaceutical media campaigns, enforces this belief. "Here, take this for your headache, take these to lose that weight, and smear this stuff on your face for everlasting beauty," yell the pitch men--and we obey, opening our wallets and in many cases ignoring common sense in doing so.

Other cultures focus on such things as yoga, breath, mantras and karma. More archaic societies focused on spirits, gods, ancestor worship, and shamanistic blessings. Of course, these time-intensive alternatives would never do for our breakneck lifestyles where instant gratification is aim of most daily or weekly endeavors.

A fine compromise between these two divergent health strategies is the raw food lifestyle. This month we spoke with raw food advocate, Paul Nison, who was in town on yet another tour of the country touting the true health benefits of eating raw food.

"People are getting interested in it for several reasons,' observes Paul. "One reason is that they're sick and they hear that it will cure them. Another reason is it's a trend, or people think it's a trend. Hollywood's picking up on it, so people want to follow what's in trend. But it's not really a trend. It's a diet--it's a way of eating. People just want to feel better, and they want to avoid disease and illness. They see people who are doing this with such great results, and it makes so much sense, that they figure they're going to try it."

Paul was led inadvertently to the raw food lifestyle at age 19 via a diagnosis of ulcerative colitis--one of the most painful of intestinal disorders. "I got colitis flare-ups about six times per year," says Paul. "Every time I went to the doctor, she told me to stay away from dairy foods until I felt better. Then she increased the dosage of steroids she was giving me. When I felt better after a few weeks, she said it was okay to eat dairy foods again. After that I began to eliminate whatever the doctors told me was okay to eat. Eggs, meat, and sugar to name just a few. I told my doctor I felt better without these foods. She told me food had nothing to do with my condition. After hearing that from her, I knew I was on the right track."

As Paul continued to eliminate cooked foods from his diet, he also continued to research the lifestyle, being greatly influenced by Dave Klein (Publisher/Editor of Living Nutrition magazine), and David Wolfe, who had books and radio programs circulating. Joining raw food support groups, and networking with other raw fooders, Paul ended up with a 100% raw diet. "Since going 100% raw, I have completely overcome ulcerative colitis. I feel better than ever and have become increasingly inspired about life. I quit my stressful job and began working as a raw food chef in a vegetarian restaurant. I organize raw-food potlucks every month. I have started a raw food support group, and I give lectures on the raw food lifestyle to help others that have gotten their wake-up call."

One misconception about adopting a raw food diet is that it is time-consuming, and complicated. Paul points out that it is really just a matter of doing the learning curve and being aware and alert to raw opportunities. "It's the quickest, the easiest, the cheapest, and has the most variety of foods of any type of diet in the world. So any of those reasons alone would be positive reasons why to eat this way," enthuses Paul.

Transitioning
Paul has written three books. His first, The Raw Life presents practical, easy and smart ways to incorporate raw foods into a cooked diet, and how to transition to 100% raw. He has interviewed dozens of long-time raw foodists, who divulge their strategies and ways of thinking about eating.

Making the transition to raw food also takes some self-reflection and an awareness of habitual patterns. "I find that people eat too much sugar, too much fat, too much protein and too little green food," says Paul. "Then they switch to a vegetarian diet, but keep doing the same thing, and keep running into the same problems. Then they switch to a raw diet, but continue to eat too much sugar and too much fat and too little green food, and they run into the same health problems."

Variety is the key to consistency in any diet, and raw fooding is no exception. Cravings for such things as pizza, lasagna, ice cream, pies, and candy can, amazingly enough, be mimicked with raw, uncooked foods. "There is such an amazing variety of raw foods, but people aren't aware of it," says Paul. "People need to get a raw food recipe book and make some recipes. Anything you can make on a cooked food diet, you can eat on a raw food diet. You can make raw food pizzas, you can make raw food hamburgers, raw food pies. You can make lasagna--you can make everything with raw foods."

Lately Paul has been traveling the world to experience new cultures and exotic fruits, and although he travels to native climes, most exotic fruits and vegetables are available in America. "There are so many kinds of fruits in this world, you could eat one different fruit every day for the rest of your life and not come close to tasting all the fruits of the world. We get most of them in this country. They don't grow here, but we get them here. People have to open up their horizons and shop at Asian markets or Latin groceries and see the different types of foods that are out there."

Just going to Safeway and rummaging around in the produce section, isn't going to fully accomplish shopping goals for raw fooding. Several factors come into play, as Paul points out: "The most important thing when eating raw food, is we want it to be the highest quality possible. That would be raw, fresh, ripe and organic. Now, it's very easy in today's world to get raw and organic. Ripe and fresh is another story. You've got to work really hard to find where we can get ripe and fresh foods. But raw and organic is everywhere. Organic is so important because it's a high quality food, and when it's not, it's a low quality food. Some of the dirtiest water we can get comes from un-organic fruits and vegetables." Paul recommends searching the internet for resources in local areas, as well as hooking up with raw food groups that are springing up everywhere.

Raw fooding is basically anti-technological. ""We don't need anything other than our fingers. We don't even need utensils when we're eating raw, uncooked vegetables and fruits," notes Paul. "However, there are some things that will make things easier, but they're not definitely needed. A good blender, a juicer, a knife and a cutting board, are the four things I would highly recommend."

Food isn't everything...
In his travels, Paul has heard it all when it comes to symptoms, diseases and conditions people want to heal by raw fooding. "Probably the most popular problem is problems with Candida, which is actually one of the major causes of more severe health problems," declares Paul. "Everything from cancer to arthritis, to chronic fatigue syndrome, irritable bowel disease, inflammatory bowel disease, diabetes--the raw food diet will heal every disease out there that is caused by diet. But, a person won't necessarily stay healed if they're only going to look to food for the answer. There are spiritual ways to heal, also. For example, if a person is eating the best diet in the world, but they're holding on to bitterness, and they're not forgiving other people for things, they could very well get some diseases. Vice versa, somebody could eat badly, and have that down and be healthy. There are many factors other than just food that affect our health, but we don't have to worry about food when we eat raw food."

Enzymes and Modern Stress by Boyd Martin

Modern-day nerve and immune system stresses, environmental pollution, and an obesity pandemic ironically connected to nutritional deficiencies, are just a few of the insults our bodies cope with every hour. It is little wonder the general state of health in the world is deteriorating, and many scientists point to lack of enzyme production as one major cause. Enzymes do everything from breaking down french fries to attacking viruses and bacteria, not to mention attempting to digest whatever we put into our mouths. A leader in this research and the development of enzymatic formulas is Dr. DicQie Fuller-Looney, founder of the Transformation Enzymes company based in Houston, Texas, USA. Her groundbreaking work in this field reveals a very holistic approach to body health, and offers hope to those suffering the effects of a fast-paced, overworked, and stressful modern life.

Most of us are so caught up in the intensity of economic survival, raising kids, dealing with relationships, and other demands, that often our health takes a back seat. Good health begins with a healthy lifestyle. As obvious as that seems, it requires daily reinforcement, planning and an overall strategy. Instead, faced with the prospect of having the deal with yet another project, it's sometimes easier to assign blame: the government's environmental and agricultural policies, the IRS, the food industry, on and on ad nauseum.

"It's about control, not blame," says Dr. Fuller-Looney. "If you know what your choices are but you continue to make poor choices, then it is something that you have created and you are not in control. We have to stop doing what doesn't work for us. We do that by finding out the reasons why it doesn't work for us."

So when it comes to health, lifestyle is everything. Understanding how our bodies work, and what we can do to support that work is part of taking responsibility for health. Beyond needing clean air to breathe and pure water to drink, the right foods and the enzymes to digest them are the next most important thing.

People in the United States, as well as most of the Western world increasingly are unable to properly digest the food they eat. The $40 billion annual antacid and digestive relief industry in the U.S. readily attests to that. In most cases, these items treat the symptoms, not the cause. Worse, the suppression of the symptoms usually further exacerbates the cause.

When the food we eat is not properly digested, over time, one thing is virtually guaranteed to happen--we get sick. There is growing evidence that the primary cause of most health problems is bad digestion. Good digestion is a direct measure of optimal health. Undigested food creates toxic waste in our body. The toxicity sets into motion the onset of disease--arthritis, fibromyalgia, irritable bowel syndrome, colitis, chronic heart burn, and cancer, to name just a few. These maladies are typically misconstrued as the inevitable frailty of aging or the unexplained action of heredity and genetics.

Many of these conditions can be prevented and/or reversed with lifestyle modification combined with digestive enzyme therapy. With the proper application of supplementary digestive enzymes, an insulted metabolism can be restored and internal biological systems returned to a healthy normal.

PROTEIN DIGESTION
Dr. Fuller-Looney names inadequate protein digestion as the primary villain to good health. "We need to digest our food, especially protein," she says. "As we age, we have a problem digesting protein. So many in nursing homes are wasting away, just skin on bones. This happens even if they are staying active. The one thing that all elderly people have in common is that they cannot break down protein. They cannot build muscle. And that is because everything is tied to the loss of enzymes."

Protease, the enzyme that converts raw proteins into useable amino acids, is initially manufactured in the pancreas. But beyond digesting new protein intake, the protease production of your body is also used for rebuilding tissues. If there is a lot of tissue damage of the digestive tract because of nutritional abuse, this adds a big demand, often exceeding the requirements needed to digest food intake. Additionally, the body's immune system uses protease to break down and eliminate dead bacteria, viruses and parasites. Pile on stress and other coping mechanisms to make up for organ dysfunction, and clearly the demand for protease exceeds the body's ability to produce it.

"It is vitally important to digest proteins while they are still in the gut," reveals Dr. Fuller-Looney. "What happens to undigested proteins? Partially digested proteins are utilized by the microorganisms in your gut, resulting in toxic amines such as cadaverine and putrescine, substances that are characteristically found in cadavers. This starts a chain reaction of inflammatory conditions and immune reactions. The microflora population uses the undigested protein, resulting in the release of ammonia. The liver is now bombarded with toxins. The liver then forms ammonia (nitrogen) and the kidneys release urea, since they have become overloaded. Your lymphatic system, which also works to remove toxins, will likewise suffer."

WOMEN'S HEALTH
Dr. Fuller-Looney has focused the majority of her research and practice on women's health issues, and the connection between hormones and enzymes. She says, "The symptoms of poor protein digestion are the same symptoms of menopause. Some of our young girls are starting their periods so early and our women are having so many problems because it all goes back to digestion. Protein digestion leads to the building of muscle and hormones. These must all go together."

Recently, doctors have found that conducting hormone replacement therapy using animal hormone sources created the unintended effect of susceptibility to cancers. It was discovered that because there were many substances besides hormones in the animal sources, it was overwhelming women's elimination organs, causing toxic buildups, eventually leading to cancers. What's worse is that a reliance had been created on the useable hormones, making it especially uncomfortable and unhealthy to "come off" the hormones. This is where enzyme supplementation comes in.

Says Dr. Fuller-Looney, "Health care professionals cannot cure all of their patient's symptoms just by giving out hormones. Doctors have finally seen that. Doctors now need to see that they also must give enzymes. A woman who is hormonally imbalanced by age twenty-five continues that way to early menopause. In fact, some little girls have been on birth control hormones since they were eight or nine years old. It is no surprise, then, that hormonal imbalance is so prevalent."

Dr. Fuller-Looney has noted that the symptoms of menopause are the exact same symptoms of non-digestion of protein. Everything we eat must be broken down by enzymes first, then hormones can be created by the body. Therefore, by providing a sufficient supply of enzymes, sufficient hormone levels can be created.

Besides the need for proper protein digestion for certain types of hormones, fat metabolism is also critical in the production of hormones, since most hormones are synthesized by the body from cholesterol. Failed fat digestion causes cholesterol to buildup in the bloodstream, leading to circulatory blockages and low hormone levels.

WEIGHT LOSS
Chronic appetite cravings that lead to overeating are a warning by the body that it is not properly digesting those foods. When enzyme supplementation is applied to weight loss, people report a lack of cravings, lowered hunger, and more energy. This is because the foods they do eat get fully digested, giving their bodies the nutrients it needed.

"What a person lacks in enzymes will determine what they need in food," declares Dr. Fuller-Looney. "If they cannot break down a certain food, then their body will crave that nourishment even more. However, regardless of how much of it they eat, they will not benefit from it. If they are unable to properly digest their food, then the more of it they eat, the more of it they will crave. Enzyme supplementation is what bridges the gap between biochemical deficiencies and nutritional balance. Enzyme therapy has given countless patients the key to weight loss."

USE ENZYMES!
Unlike hormone replacement therapy, or some over-the-counter sleep aids, the body does not become dependent on enzyme supplementation. Enzymes are already being produced in the body in response to food intake. The problem lies in the inadequate production of enzymes to meet the demands of modern stress factors, including denatured fast food, environmental toxins, economic and emotional stress. Therefore, enzyme supplements help the body to simply catch up to its demands. Acknowledging and understanding this is the key to lifestyle change.

Dr. Fuller-Looney recommends the following general guidelines for a healthy lifestyle:

* Breathing Exercises (Yoga, etc.) especially when nervous or upset.
* Meditation to forget thoughts and come to peace.
* Feed your spirit--speak to your inner source.
* Adjust your attitude or intention every day. Get up with the intention to have a joyous and balanced day.

And...take your enzymes!

Obesity Epidemic by Boyd Martin

Remember the New York teenagers, Ashley Pelman and Jazlyn Bradley, who sued McDonald's for making them obese? One of the plaintiffs included a 15-year-old Bronx boy who says he's been eating McDonald's food since the age of six. Gregory Rhymes--at 5 feet, 6 inches tall--says he now weighs 400 pounds and has been diagnosed with diabetes. Newsday reported that the children's parents say they never saw posters in McDonald's restaurants that explain the nutritional content of the food.

William Sears, the author of several books on children and nutrition, commented on this story saying, "The bottom line for the food industry is money. What motivates the food industry and health-minded mothers is worlds apart."

I say, What's wrong with this picture? What's wrong is the value of self-determinism that was obviously ignored or disagreed with by these teenagers' parents. Victimism may be the core issue surrounding obesity outside of a glandular birth defect. Wouldn't the American Founding Fathers be cringing in embarrassment to find citizens so radically oriented away from the principles of free choice and democratic self-restraint? Of course, children follow the examples of their parents, and eating habits along with moral values begin in the home.

That being said, once a heart-and-soul decision has been made to reverse obesity (now defined as overweight by 30 percent of the ideal body weight), as free-choosing citizens here is a list of proven protocols to help start out on that road to recovery and wellness.

Behaviors
Currently Dr. Phil seems to be the champion of the weight-control movement, and his approach is behavioral. One main point that hit home to me was that of support of the household. If those you are living with have a refrigerator full of sweet, high-calorie snack foods, and are indulging in them constantly, it makes the job of sticking to a regimen that much more difficult. On one show, Dr. Phil went so far as to say we should cut-off any relationships in our lives that oppose our weight loss intention. Ultimately, this would mean the entire family would have to be involved in your weight loss program, and respect it because it is your heart's desire.

Exercise
Taking in fewer calories than you burn is the cornerstone of any weight loss strategy. On the average, for every 3,500 calories that we eat over what we need to maintain our weight (regardless of how many days it takes us to do it), we gain a pound. So if your maintenance level is 2,400 calories daily, and you are consuming 2,650 calories daily, you can expect to gain about a half pound or so per week (250 calories/day x 7 days/week divided by 3,500 calories/pound = 0.50 pounds/week). It also works in reverse; for every 3,500 calories under our maintenance requirement that we don't eat, we lose a pound.

Of course, the idea is to figure out ways to increase caloric output and decrease caloric input. So a combination of more than normal exercise coupled with below-maintenance calorie intake insures weight loss. Since the goal is to maximize calorie use (while decreasing calorie intake), what is the most efficient exercise?

Experts agree that although aerobic exercise is good for you, it is not the most efficient calorie-burning activity. Muscles burn the most calories of any body system. Therefore, working as many muscles as possible during a workout is the most efficient way to more rapid weight loss. Weight training, martial arts, or yoga are the obvious choices here. But whatever the choice is, it has to be enjoyable and has to produce results, making it much easier to remain on the program.

Nutritional Support
The following are the latest products designed to help the body use calories (increase metabolism), and to use stored fat.

Herbal Accelerator and LypoZyme: These enzyme/herbal formulas target the body's fat utilization strategies. The enzyme lipase is what the body uses to digest fat in the liver, and is the main ingredient in these formulas.

Carnitine: It is the "forklift" that carries fat to the mitochondria in cells to be burned. It is an energy facilitating ingredient. In a recent study, Carnitine caused an 11-fold increase in weight loss over a 12-week period. Carnitine also raises HDL (good cholesterol) and lowers triglycerides (precursors to artery blockages)

CLA (conjugated linoleic acid): Helps block fat cells from filling up, and increases muscle metabolism creating leaner muscles.

Grapefruit: Actively inhibits enzymes in the intestinal tract responsible for converting carbohydrates to fat. It is an excellent source of Vitamin C, potassium and folic acid as well.
